...I didn't mean to get started on a Yami no Matsuei fic. I really didn't. I don't know the fandom at all, I can only sort of quarter-assedly understand the manga I own, I have only vague ideas of what happens beyond vol.4.

BTW, re the whole X dub thing: Crispin Freeman will be playing Fuuma, not Kakyou. Got the news from his fanclub way back when they started recording. I would have cast him as Seishirou, myself, but then that's me and I'm weird. ^_^

"The Bet" is, at long last, finished and up on CLAMPesque. Good holy jeebus. I'm never spending that long on a one-shot ever again.

Had two friends over for dinner last night. This pretty much only served to reinforce the fact that I have more baker in me than cook: my mother can make an entire meal with no measurements, whereas if I do not follow a recipe, I'll end up kind of swamped. Given, I can adapt the recipes of the things I bake--just ask anyone in my family who's ever had my cheese-and-ham biscuits--but I need to know how much flour and salt and baking powder goes in. Go figure, huh?

But dinner was lovely, my friends were great, and we watched "Nightmare Before Christmas" and commented on how utterly inappropriate it is for children. XD "Beat him with a stick!"

Oh. On a totally unrelated note--bringing things back to fanfiction--new link over there. *bows to Leareth* Glad to provide a little enjoyment! Even if I do tend to put my foot in my mouth and mumble when someone I respect says something nice about me. ^_^;

Because everybody's talking about it.

I don't pay for the ffnet services. So I kinda have to sit back and take this and not complain too loudly. I'm not going to say that they're violating any agreement I have with them, or that it's censorship, or whatever. It's their decision, and I have to respect it, because I want my stories in that forum. It's their ballpark and they're letting me futz around in it for free, so I play by their rules.

However.

I think there are better ways to deal with the NC-17 "problem" than they did. I like the idea of getting ffnet a big old repository just for those fics, and putting up firewalls and warnings up the wazoo (well, if they want them), and then getting a gigantic neon sign to wield when concerned parents come a-knockin': "WE HAVE WARNINGS UP. WE HAVE [such-and-such protective measures] IN PLACE."

And I think there's a better way to deal with telling everyone what the problem is, too.

I think FFnet's decision may have been the result of a visit from the Stupid People In Large And/Or Noisy Groups. You know the kind--the ones who threaten lawsuits if they don't get what they want. And I can understand that FFnet would get really damn scared at the threat of a lawsuit--after all, fanfiction by its very nature is on extremely shaky legal ground. Some assholic authors have tried to block fanfiction based on their works in its entirety, which is not only a waste of time but really very stupid--and always ends up as a massive embarrassment for almost everyone involved.

Now, if the decision was influenced by these Vociferous Morons, okay. Sure. Let us, the fanwriters, know, and you can bet that at least a dedicated few of us will try to figure out ways to do things that keep the Noisy Eedjits satisfied (or at least confuse them enough to keep them from complaining for a while). Be honest with us, and I can promise you that at least a handful of us in every fandom will do our damndest to make you proud. But if you just pop up out of nowhere and hand us this decision with an explanation that's vague at best, well, jeez, of course we're going to complain.

The other thing I'm not so happy about--and I'm really surprised that so few people in blogland have spoken up about it--is their new-and-improved focus on original fiction. Um... it's fan fiction dot net. Can't you guys get originalfiction.net? You already have a system that, even with all its faults, basically works. You can re-apply it to another archive. And like whatsisname said in that baseball movie, if you build it, they will come. You'll get authors and volunteers. And the bandwidth problems, if there are any, may lessen a little.

FFnet is doing a great thing (even if a lot of the people who post there aren't contributing great things). I wish they weren't afraid to go ahead and do a little more to make their great thing even better. After all, that's what the best and brightest thing about fandom is, isn't it? Going above and beyond where you don't have to in order to produce something really good. The few fans who do that always make the rest of them proud. And, really... it is something to be legitimately proud of, when that happens.

Anyway, my $0.02. *drops pennies into the rant jar*
